Noted yesteryear actress and national award winner, Aranmula Ponnamma passed away today at a private hospital in Trivandrum. She was 96. In her acting career spanning for more than 6 decades, she had acted with 3 generation and over a five hundred movies. She was in treatment for old age diseases, and has been hospitalised earlier this month. Her children and grand children were present in the hospital when she had her last breath.
Born on march 22, 1914 as one of the five childrens to her parents, Ponnamma started her career as a Karnatic music vocalist at the age of 12. She had acted in few popular plays, before making her debut in film. She made a film debut with Sasidharan in 1950. She went on to do mother roles to the main protagonist and is widely described as the mother figure in Malayalam cinema.
In the year 1995, Ponnamma got her state and national award for her performance in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s film Kadhapurushan. She was awarded with J C Daniel life time achiement award in 2006 by the Kerala goventment. Few of her noted films include Bagyalakshmi, Viruthan Shanku, Kandam Bacha Kotte and Kadhapurushan. The last film she acted was Janathipathyam.
The body will be cremated tomorrow.
